09/07/10

I have a little boy in my room who is repeating kindergarten this year. After the first day of school he told me he didn't like school because he wasn't good at it. A six-year-old boy who already has low self-esteem... it broke my heart. Today, two weeks later, he told me he wants to stay in my class forever.

So, if you are wondering why people become teachers, it for moments like this. No, it's not because kids are cute. Trust me, they aren't that cute when they disobey for the 100th time. It's not because we can leave at 3:15. I left "early" today at 4:30. I got to work at 6:45 AM! We don't become teachers because of the summer, although it's nice... No, we become teachers so we can help six-year-olds see how special they are. We become teachers to teach first graders how to read. We become teachers to help fifth graders understand how our country became a nation. We become teachers to show kindergarteners how great learning can be...
A student gave me this monster today :)
Yes, picture day. Still as horrifying as it was in middle school!
